Daniel Grinberg gives guest lecture on Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests in Current Debates in Media course

“Daniel Grinberg is a PhD candidate in the Department of Film and Media Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Previously, he studied Communication and Culture at Indiana University and English Literature at the University of Virginia. In between, he also taught English at a high school in France and embarked on an ongoing quest to watch every film in the Criterion Collection.

“His doctoral scholarship focuses on re-viewing documentary film and surveillance records through Freedom of Information Act disclosures. He has also written on topics such as terror watchlists, virtual reality simulations, predictive security algorithms, and the militainment network of the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. His research interests include war and security studies, information policy, media and the environment, and media activism. He is the Graduate Student Representative of the SCMS Documentary Studies Scholarly Interest Group; the co-editor of “Surveillance States,” issue 11 of Media Fields Journal; and the co-organizer of the Power Dynamics: 2016 Media and the Environment Conference and Ruins: 2017 Media Fields Journal Conference. His writing has appeared in publications such as Jump Cut, Studies in Documentary Film, and InMedia and is forthcoming in Spectator and Journal of War and Culture Studies.”
